# Selling Your Business? What Do You Want Life to Look Like After the Sale?

by [**Paulo Aguilar, CFA, CAIA**](https://blog.wealthstonegroup.com/insights/author/paulo-aguilar) on Oct 21, 2026

Business owners preparing for an [exit or succession](https://www.wealthstonegroup.com/services/business-exit-planning-esops) naturally spend considerable time thinking about valuation, potential buyers, taxes, deal structure, and when to sell. But there is another question that should come earlier in the process: what do you actually want your life to look like after the business is sold?

The answer can influence almost every other part of the exit. An owner who wants a complete break from the business may approach a transaction very differently from someone who wants to remain involved, invest in new companies, or continue working in an advisory capacity. The income the owner needs, the lifestyle they want to maintain, and what they intend to do with their time and capital should help define the financial outcome the transaction needs to produce.

In that sense, personal planning is not something that begins after the business is sold. It should help shape the exit strategy from the beginning.

> Before deciding what your business needs to sell for, it helps to understand what you need the sale to make possible.

## Start With What You Want the Exit to Accomplish

For many owners, the business has been more than an investment. It has provided income, structure, relationships, responsibility, and something meaningful to work toward for years or even decades.

Selling changes all of those things at once.

That does not mean an owner needs to have the next 20 years of life mapped out before starting an exit process. But there should be enough clarity to understand what the owner is moving toward.

Does retirement mean stopping work completely? Does the owner want to start another company, invest in other businesses, serve on boards, travel, spend more time with family, or remain involved with the company after the sale?

Those answers matter because different objectives can lead to different financial and transaction decisions.

## Your Personal GoalsCan Influence the Deal Structure

The highest headline purchase price is not necessarily the only consideration in evaluating an offer.

An owner who wants a clean break may place greater value on receiving liquidity at closing and minimizing future obligations. Another owner may be comfortable with an earnout, rollover equity, consulting arrangement, or continued ownership because they want to participate in the company's next stage.

Neither approach is inherently better. They represent different objectives.

The same applies to timing. An owner who has already determined how much wealth is needed to support their family and lifestyle may view an attractive offer differently from someone who still needs several more years of business income to reach their financial goals.

Personal planning therefore provides context for evaluating the transaction. It helps the owner determine not simply whether an offer is financially attractive, but whether its terms support the life they want after closing.

> A successful exit is not just about converting a business into cash. It is about converting years of business ownership into the financial flexibility to support whatever comes next.

## Know What theSale Proceeds Need to Accomplish

A business sale can create a significant liquidity event, but the headline purchase price is not the same as the amount ultimately available to fund the owner's lifestyle.

Taxes, debt repayment, transaction expenses, earnouts, rollover equity, and other deal terms can materially affect both the amount and timing of the proceeds.

That makes it important to understand the owner's post-sale financial needs before the transaction closes.

How much annual income will the family need? How much liquidity should remain readily available? Are there major purchases or commitments ahead? Does the owner want to provide for children or grandchildren, make charitable gifts, invest in another business, or leave a particular estate?

Once those objectives are defined, the investment strategy has a purpose. The portfolio is no longer simply responsible for “investing the proceeds.” It is designed around the specific things the capital needs to accomplish.

## Plan for the Transition,Not Just the Transaction

There is also a practical adjustment that comes with leaving a company.

An owner who has spent decades making decisions and solving problems may suddenly have considerably more time and fewer responsibilities. Business relationships that once occurred naturally may also change after the transaction.

Thinking about this transition before closing can help an owner determine how much continued involvement they actually want.

Some may discover that they want a board role, consulting arrangement, new investment opportunities, or another entrepreneurial project. Others may realize that continued involvement is precisely what they are trying to leave behind.

Having clarity before negotiating the transaction can prevent an owner from accepting post-sale obligations that later become frustrating or, conversely, making a complete break only to realize that some continued involvement would have been desirable.

## How to Choosethe Right Approach for Your Situation

A useful starting point is to reverse the traditional exit-planning process.

Instead of beginning with “What is my business worth?”, begin with “What do I want the next stage of my life to look like?”

From there, determine what that life is likely to require financially. Then evaluate whether the business, personal assets, real estate holdings, retirement accounts, and eventual sale proceeds can support it.

Only then does the transaction become the final piece of the planning process.

That does not mean valuation, taxes, deal structure, and buyer selection become less important. It means those decisions are being made against a clearly defined objective.

## Conclusion

Selling a business is both a financial transaction and a major personal transition. Preparing for one without preparing for the other can leave an owner with a successful deal but little clarity about what the proceeds or newfound flexibility are supposed to accomplish.

Personal planning provides that context.

By defining what the owner wants from life after the business, how much capital that lifestyle requires, how involved they want to remain, and what they want their wealth to accomplish for their family and future, the transaction can be structured around a more meaningful objective than simply achieving the highest possible sale price.

A structured planning discussion can help connect the owner's post-exit goals with the financial outcome, transaction structure, investment strategy, and broader wealth plan needed to support the next stage of life.
